Another branch of our Outreach Ministries, the Local Outreach offers practical ways for the people of The Lakeway Church to help meet the spiritual, physical and project needs of our local community. This is generally a hands-on experience for our members!
One of the programs led by several church members are the English as a Second Language classes given free of charge to residents of Apache Shores and the Lake Travis area, a local community just outside of Lakeway. In conjunction with Lighthouse Ministries, classes are offered every Tuesday evening to adults and children.
Many of our members have participated with Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) in helping our neighbors after a disaster. In 2011, in response to the terrible fires in the Spicewood area, church members helped in the cleanup of home sites, provided food and water to workers and "adopted" families to whom they provided essential articles for their temporary homes.
The Christian Compassion Center (C3) collects merchandise from national retail outlets, local businesses and individuals for distribution to Austin citizens in need, free of charge, through associated faith-based non-profit organizations in the city. Our volunteers assist them in things like making pick ups from retail outlets and delivering to warehouses or organizations. They also assist in fundraising.
Still other members serve ice cream to and visit with residents at a local assisted living community every week. Vista Oaks Assisted Living is right around the corner from the church; many of its residents are homebound membes of the church.
Some of the Caring for Neighbors projects include:
- Property repair and maintenance - working with our project team
- Volunteering at the Community Healthcare Volunteer Clinic
- Participating in ice cream socials at local assisted living facilities
- Welcoming and outreach activities to the Lakeway Church Christian Preschool families
- Preparing and providing meals to those in need
- Visiting the sick and shut-ins
Benevolence
The Lakeway Church has had a Benevolence Committee for many years to support local charitable organizations or individuals. Benevolence funds disbursed by The Lakeway Church come from the church's special offerings at Easter and Christmas. The recipients are selected to the following criteria:
- A ministry which is based or centered upon Christianity,
- A ministry which serves people in the Greater Lake Travis area who are needy, and
- A ministry which meets standards set by the Better Business Bureau and the IRS.
Some of the recent beneficiaries of these funds are:
- Lake Travis Crisis Ministries
- Capital Area Food Bank
- Operation Christmas Child - Samaritan's Purse
- Healthcare Volunteer Associates Clinic
- Helping Hand Ministry of Spicewood
- Angel Tree - a Ministry of Prison Fellowship
- Luke 4:18
- The Salvation Army
