Fellowship Center, Room 208 Addiction: A Spiritual Journey
Addiction Class to be held at The Lakeway Church
Is addiction a gift from God? For those in the throes of addiction or navigating early recovery this statement can be an affront to their experience. How often do we see addiction as a spiritual journey? The recovery story of addiction, like many Biblical stories, gives witness to God’s transforming power in the lives of his people. The process of recovery from any addiction is about growing along spiritual lines.
Addiction exacts a huge economic, physical, emotional and social toll on the lives of many individuals and families. Addiction, simply defined, is a destructive relationship with a substance, person or activity. The majority of people struggling with addiction go to work every day, raise families and attend religious services. The opportunity to make a difference in the life of someone struggling with his or her own or a loved one’s addiction is often no farther away than the person sitting next to us in the pew on Sunday morning – someone whose life is silently unraveling due to addiction and who desperately needs us to reach out with an open heart and the love of Christ.
With knowledge, compassion and understanding, we can approach this topic through the use of the Holy Scriptures and “best practices” in the fields of prevention, intervention and recovery support. An educational series, held at The Lakeway Church, will cover the following topics: the scope of addiction, affects on the families, sharing concern with loved ones, the process of healing and recovery, prevention strategies, and initiating these life-saving and life-giving ministries.
Drew Brooks, who has worked in the fields of prevention, treatment, recovery, public health and lay ministry over the past 25 years, will provide the leadership. This adult interactive class will comprise six consecutive Mondays, each from 7:00-8:30 pm. The current series began January 16, 2012. You are welcome to join them at any time.
